BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza on the Grill: Not Your Typical Pizza

If you haven’t tried cooking pizza on a grill yet, you’re absolutely missing out on a staple party classic!

So, let me share my BBQ pulled pork pizza on the grill recipe to introduce you to the world of grilled pizza with my favorite dish!

🧑‍🍳 Core Components of Pulled Pork Pizza on the Grill

Store-bought Dough: For most convenience, I love using store-bought dough for this recipe. Of course, homemade ones will likely taste better, so feel free to make yours at home!

Pulled Pork: If you have leftover pulled pork, it’ll only take you 30 minutes to cook this dish. However, since we won’t always have pulled pork leftovers that are readily available, I included how to cook pulled pork from scratch in this recipe as well.

BBQ Sauce: This will serve as the main sauce of our pizza. Choose your preferred brand!

Toppings: This recipe uses pulled pork, cheese, onions, bell pepper, and chopped parsley as toppings. Feel free to add or remove toppings as you see fit (no judgment if you hate pineapples on pizza).

🍴Tips to Keep in Mind When Cooking Pizza on the Grill

Keep these tips in mind to ensure your grilled pizza is a success, even if this is your first time cooking one!

Don’t Forget to Oil the Dough: Oiling the dough on both sides will prevent it from sticking to the grill’s grates and will enhance the overall flavor of the pizza.

Keep a Close Eye on the Bottom of the Pizza: Check the bottom of the dough during the last few minutes of cooking to prevent overcooking. If needed, move the pizza away from direct heat as you wrap up cooking.
Close the Lid: After adding the toppings, you want the lid to be shut throughout the rest of the cooking process (except when you’re checking the progress). This ensures that the cheese will melt nicely and the toppings will be nicely cooked.

Must-Try BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza on the Grill

Yield: 1 large pizza for 4
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 3 hours 15 minutes
Total Time: 3 hours 30 minutes

This is one of the best-grilled pizzas you’ll ever try! Just be patient while waiting for the pulled pork to cook, and the rest of the steps will be incredibly easy!

Ingredients

For the Pulled Pork:

  • 2 to 3 pounds of pork shoulder
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • ½ cup of barbecue sauce (plus more for topping)

For the Pizza:

  • 1 pound of store-bought pizza dough
  • 1½ cups of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup of shredded smoked cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup of diced pineapple
  • ¼ small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil (for grilling)
  • Chopped parsley or cilantro for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). As you wait for it to heat up, season the pork shoulder with salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Bake the pork for about 3 hours until it’s fork-tender, and allow it to rest at room temperature for 15 minutes before shredding.
  2. Mix the shredded pork with your preferred BBQ sauce.
  3. Preheat your outdoor grill to medium-high heat. As it heats up, roll out your store-bought pizza dough on a floured surface. A pound of dough should be able to make one large 12-inch pizza that’s about ½ inch thick. Once it’s fully rolled out to your desired size and thickness, lightly brush both sides of the dough with olive oil.
  4. If necessary, clean the grates of your grill. After that, lightly oil the grates and place your oiled dough on the grill. Close the grill’s lid and cook the dough for about 3 to 5 minutes. The bottom of the dough should be brown and puffy before you proceed to the next step.
  5. Lightly brush the top side of the dough with olive oil again and flip it over.
  6. After about 2 to 3 minutes, drizzle some BBQ sauce on top of the pizza and spread it evenly.
  7. Add a cup of mozzarella cheese, ¼ cup of shredded cheddar cheese, and then a generous amount of the pulled pork you cooked. If you love pineapples on pizza, this is the time to add the sliced pineapples, along with the red onions and bell peppers.
  8. Close the lid of your grill and allow the pizza to cook undisturbed for 5 to 7 minutes. You want the cheese to be melted and bubbly and the crust to be cooked thoroughly. If the pizza’s bottom is browning too quickly before you’re even at the 5-minute mark, move it away from direct heat.
  9. Garnish your grilled pizza as desired. Slice it, and enjoy while it’s still warm!
