If you’re looking for a budget-friendly meal that tastes like a million bucks, this old-fashioned Salisbury steak is perfect for you.
What You’ll Need
To start off, you’ll need these ingredients for the patty:
- Ground beef: Get ground beef with a little fat (around 85% lean) because this ensures an extra juicy and flavorful steak.
- Breadcrumbs: This not only binds the ingredients together but also adds texture. Based on your preferences, you can choose either plain or panko breadcrumbs.
- Egg: This works hand-in-hand with breadcrumbs to hold your patties together.
- Ketchup: Ketchup is here to kick off your list of seasonings. This ingredient adds a hint of sweetness and tanginess to your patties.
- Worcestershire sauce: Then, you have Worcestershire sauce for that umami taste. It complements the beef perfectly and enhances the richness of the entire dish.
- Onion and garlic powders: On top of your sauces, these spices make a huge difference in terms of making the flavor profile more rounded and complex.
To make the onion gravy, here’s what you’ll need:
- Beef broth: This will form the base of your gravy.
- Sliced onion: This will give your gravy some sweetness and texture.
- All-purpose flour: This works as a thickening agent that prevents your gravy from being too runny.
- Unsalted butter: Then, you have butter to make your gravy silky and rich.
- Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce: Finally, you have a flavorful duo to finish off your gravy.
Some Fun Variations To Try
This old-fashioned recipe is only the beginning. You can add your spin to it and make it your own.
For example, instead of making an onion gravy, you can replace it with a mushroom gravy. And then, if you want to add more flavor to your beef, you can infuse it with some fresh (or dried) herbs.
Now, if you’re following a strict diet, you can easily make this recipe gluten-free and low-carb by substituting regular breadcrumbs with crushed gluten-free crackers, almond flour, or crushed pork rinds.
Salisbury Steak With Onion Gravy (The Old-Fashioned Way)
In just 25 minutes, you can make savory and impossibly juicy beef patties, paired with a rich and thick onion gravy. This recipe is simple + super tasty.
Ingredients
For the onion gravy:
- 2 cups of beef broth
- 1 small onion (sliced thinly)
- 2 tablespoons EACH of all-purpose flour and unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon of soy sauce
- Salt and ground black pepper (to taste)
For the Salisbury steak patties:
- 1½ pounds of ground beef (that’s around 85% lean)
- ⅓ cup of breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg (or 2 small eggs)
- 2 tablespoons of ketchup
- 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon of onion powder
- ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
- Salt and ground black pepper (to taste)
- 2 tablespoons of oil (for cooking)
Instructions
- Start by prepping your patties: Get a large bowl and blend your ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, sauces, and spices together until you have one cohesive mixture.
- Shape the mixture into ¾-inch thick rounds, which should leave you with about 4 to 6 patties.
- Cook your patties: Warm up your skillet and spread your oil all around. Place your patties inside and cook for about 4 to 5 minutes per side.
- Once they turn a nice shade of brown, remove the patties from the heat and set aside while you prepare the gravy.
- Make your onion gravy: Using the same skillet, caramelize your sliced onions in butter until they soften and turn a nice golden color. This should take around 5 to 7 minutes.
- Now, sprinkle your flour on top. Continue stirring for about 1 minute.
- After a minute, whisk in your beef broth carefully. Keep stirring until the lumps are gone.
- When you arrive at a smooth consistency, pour in your soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the gravy mixture to a simmer, and leave it to thicken for a few minutes.
- Give your sauce a taste and adjust the seasoning as you please.
- To finish up: Bring your patties back to the skillet. Use a spoon to drizzle some sauce over the top and cover. Simmer on low for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- After the gravy has thickened and the patties have cooked completely, take the skillet off the heat to rest for a few minutes before serving.
