Steak Fried Rice Recipe

Say no to takeout, and hello to the best steak fried rice you can make from home!

This recipe only takes half an hour to make and is so much more delicious than the fried rice you can purchase from fast food chains or restaurants.

Think this fried rice looks great? Well, it tastes much better than the pictures suggest.

So, let’s get right into it!

💯 How to Failproof Your Fried Rice

I now refer to myself as a fried rice aficionado. But it hasn’t always been that way.

In my first year of cooking, I struggled with countless fried rice recipes.

Some turned out too soggy, others were overly dry, and a few just didn’t have the right flavor or texture.

Those continued until I finally discovered the three golden rules of cooking fried rice:

  • Use Day-Old Rice: Or, at least, make sure that your rice is no longer hot to the touch when you incorporate it into your fried rice.
  • Stick to Medium-High Heat: This prevents the rice from becoming mushy and allows the veggies to remain crisp and vibrant.
  • Keep It Moving: Fried rice requires constant stirring to ensure everything cooks evenly.

Note: You don’t need a wok to cook good fried rice. Just make sure your skillet’s big enough to avoid overcrowding.

One of the best things about this recipe is its versatility.

So, if you want to add a bit of extra flavor or personalize the dish, feel free to get creative.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

Use Fresh Vegetables: I usually use frozen vegetables for this recipe for simplicity’s sake, but you can totally use your preferred fresh vegetables! Bell peppers, mushrooms, and carrots are some of the classic veggie choices for fried rice.

Add Some Toppings: Feel free to add some herbs, pineapple, or fried eggs for added flavors and textures! These are just a few of the toppings you can add to this fried rice to make it even more unique and enticing.

Get Creative With The Seasoning: Again, to keep things simple, I only used salt and pepper to season this fried rice. But anytime I want to add more complexity, I add other flavor enhancers such as teriyaki sauce, chili flakes, or sesame seeds while cooking.

🍽️ What to Serve With Steak Fried Rice

While you can eat steak fried rice on its own, I highly recommend serving it with sides for a more well-rounded meal!

Some of my go-to sides for steak fried rice are:

  • Grilled Vegetables
  • Cucumber Salad
  • Asian Dumplings

But pretty much any side that’s not too heavy is perfect to pair with this dish!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound of sirloin steak (cubed)
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of oyster sauce
  • 2 teaspoons of sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 3 cloves of garlic (minced)
  • ½ medium onion (diced)
  • 4 cups of cooked jasmine rice (preferably day-old)
  • 1 cup of frozen mixed vegetables
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3 tablespoons of butter (divided)
  • 3 green onions (separate the whites and greens)
  • Vegetable oil (for cooking)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and black pepper. Add the cubed steak and stir to coat each piece with the marinade. Let the steak marinate in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a large pan or wok over medium-high heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Crack the eggs into a bowl, whisk them, and pour them into the pan. Scramble the eggs until cooked through, then remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same pan, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil and cook the marinated steak cubes for about 3 to 4 minutes or until they’ve browned. Remove the steak from the pan and set aside.
  4. Add another tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan and proceed to sauté the onions, garlic, and white parts of the green onions. Stir-fry the vegetables for about half a minute or until they’re soft.
  5. Add the frozen vegetables to the pan and continue stir-frying for about a minute.
  6. At this point, add the cooked jasmine rice to the pan. Stir everything for about two or three minutes and break up any rice clumps.
  7. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the pan and stir until melted. Once again, stir everything well to coat the rice and vegetables with the melted butter.
  8. Return the cooked steak and scrambled eggs to the pan. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  9. Add the chopped green tops of the green onions and the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter. Season the fried rice with salt and pepper (to taste). Adjust the seasoning as needed.
  10. Serve this dish warm.
