Seafood and red meat are usually served separately, but in this steak and shrimp recipe, you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds on the same plate!
This recipe is so easy that it’s pretty much impossible to mess up.
Not to mention, it only takes 25 minutes to cook, so it’s the ideal steak dish for busy home cooks like me.
🧑🍳 Core Components of Garlic Butter Steak and Shrimp
Here’s a rundown of the ingredients you’ll need to cook the best homemade garlic butter steak and shrimp!
Steak: For this recipe, I love using New York strip steaks as they’re very tender and sear beautifully. However, feel free to use your preferred cut of steak as long as it’s well-marbled and suitable for high-heat cooking.
Olive Oil and Unsalted Butter: Searing the steak and shrimp in this combination gives the meat a rich crust and encourages better browning,
Shrimp: For convenience, I suggest using shrimp that’s already been peeled and deveined.
Minced Garlic Cloves: Adding minced garlic directly to the skillet and to the compound butter itself gives this dish its robust garlic flavors.
Chopped Herbs: Use any combination of fresh herbs you have on hand. I had fresh thyme, rosemary, and parsley, so I decided to use a little bit of each for this dish. You’ll infuse these herbs into the compound butter that’ll be used to add extra flavor to the steak and shrimp.
Salt and Pepper: Season the steaks, shrimp, and the compound butter with salt and pepper to enhance their flavors. Adjust the quantity according to your taste preferences.
🥩 How to Achieve the Perfect Steak Doneness Level
Since the steaks and shrimp will only be finished off with a simple garlic butter sauce, you must make sure that the meat is cooked to your preferred doneness level.
Luckily, that part is easy. All you need is a meat thermometer that’ll allow you to check the meat’s internal temperature as you sear your steak!
Here’s a simple temperature guideline you can follow:
Steak’s Doneness Level | Internal Temperature |
Rare | 125°F to 130°F |
Medium-Rare | 130°F to 140°F |
Medium | 140°F to 150°F. |
Medium Well | 150°F and 155°F |
Well Done | Above 160°F |
Pro tip: After searing, remove the steak from the skillet when it’s about 5°F below your target temperature. The steak will continue to cook while resting and when added back to the skillet with the shrimp.
Garlic Butter Skillet Steak and Shrimp
This pan-seared steak and shrimp offers juicy steak and flavorful shrimp that’s coated with herb-infused garlic butter sauce. It’s literally one of the best date night or family meals you’ll ever have!
Ingredients
For the Steak and Shrimp:
- 2 New York strip steaks (or your steak of choice)
- 8 oz of large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter (divided)
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
For the Garlic Compound Butter:
- 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter (softened)
- 2 to 3 garlic cloves (finely minced)
- 1 teaspoon of fresh thyme (chopped)
- 1 teaspoon of fresh rosemary (chopped)
- 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley (chopped)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- To start, make sure that the steaks are at room temperature so you’ll achieve a good sear when you cook them later.
- Prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, fresh herbs, salt, and ground pepper. Set this aside at room temperature until needed later.
- Pat the steaks dry with paper towels, then season all sides generously with salt and pepper.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add a tablespoon of olive oil and half a tablespoon of butter. When the butter melts, place the steaks in the skillet. Sear both sides for about 3 to 5 minutes, depending on your preferred doneness level. To ensure accuracy, use a meat thermometer and aim for 120°F for rare, 130°F for medium-rare, 140°F for medium, and 150°F for medium-well.
- Once cooked, remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest for 5 to 7 minutes.
- Check the remaining grease or oil in the skillet. Add the remaining butter or discard any excess as needed to ensure you only have about a tablespoon of oil left in the pan.
- Reduce the skillet’s heat to medium and add the remaining half tablespoon of butter. Stir in the minced garlic and continue stirring for about 30 seconds or until fragrant.
- Add the shrimp to the skillet. Season lightly with salt and pepper, and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly.
- When the shrimp turns pink and curls up, add the steaks back to the skillet to warm them up. Slather a dollop of the garlic butter on top of both the steaks and shrimp. Transfer to serving plates (add more garlic butter if desired) and serve warm with your favorite sides!
