You don’t have to go all the way to Philadelphia to savor the best Philly cheesesteak — you can easily make it at home with this quick and simple recipe!
Who Invented the Philly Cheesesteak?
Although no one really knows how this famous sandwich came to be, many believe it was invented in the 1930s by brothers Pat and Harry Olivieri.
Back then, the brothers ran a hot dog stand in South Philadelphia. One day, they decided to try something different for lunch, and the result was what we now know as the Philly cheesesteak.
While the sandwich was originally made up of melty cheese and sliced steak, many variations have emerged since then. And today, we’re making my go-to recipe.
Why You’ll Keep Making This Recipe Over and Over
There’s a lot to love about this recipe. Take it from me: ever since I started making it, I haven’t been able to stop!
For one, it’s super simple. It only takes less than 20 minutes to make a delicious sandwich that’s complete with carbs, protein, and veggies!
Another reason to love it? It’s quite affordable. So, instead of going to your nearest Philly cheesesteak stand, you can make a sandwich at home for just a fraction of the price.
My recipe consists of only 8 ingredients, most of which you probably already have around the house.
These include baguettes, sirloin steaks, onion, veggies, a beef stock cube, Worcestershire sauce, cheese (preferably something stretchy like mozzarella or provolone), and a sprinkle of chili flakes.
Finish It Off With Homemade Garlic Mayo
This next part is completely optional, but I like to finish off my Philly cheesesteak with a garlic mayo spread.
And this can’t be easier to make. All you have to do is get a bowl and squeeze in your mayo of choice before folding in some freshly minced garlic.
If you want, you can even add some seasonings like salt, pepper, and onion powder to really bring out the sauce’s umami flavor.
Quick & Easy Philly Cheesesteak With Garlic Mayo
This quick and easy Philly Cheesesteak (complete with garlic mayo) is a total treat. It’s packed with beefy goodness and irresistible cheese that you can make in under 20 minutes!
Ingredients
- 2 baguettes (alternatively, you can use 4 hoagie rolls)
- 2 teaspoons of sunflower oil
- 2 medium-sized sirloin steaks (about 400 grams total)
- 1 large onion (peeled and sliced thinly)
- 1 green pepper (sliced and deseeded)
- 1 beef stock cube
- 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
- 125 grams of grated or sliced Mozzarella
- 100 milliliters of boiling water
- Sea salt and ground pepper (to taste)
- Chili flakes (optional)
- 1 cup of mayonnaise
- 2 cloves of garlic (minced)
Instructions
- First things first, remove the fat off of your steaks and slice them as thin as you can.
- Grab a large frying pan and add your oil. Carefully place your steak strips inside and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes.
- While your steak is cooking, cut your bread lengthwise in half and toast it until it turns golden brown.
- Once your steak strips are done cooking, transfer them to a plate and set aside for now.
- Using the same pan, add your onions, peppers, and the rest of your oil. Cook the veggies for about 5 minutes until they start to char.
- As your veggies are frying, add your beef stock cube to a 100-milliliter boiling water and stir until it completely dissolves.
- Pour your stock, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper into the same pan and stir everything nicely. Then, take it off the heat once the liquid is mostly evaporated. Note: Don’t be alarmed if the mixture starts to bubble; that’s normal.
- Get your toasted bread slices and place them on a grill-safe baking tray (cut side up).
- Make your garlic mayo spread by getting a large bowl and adding in your mayo and minced garlic. Mix them well.
- After that, spread a spoonful of your mayo mixture on one side of your bread and top it with your steak, veggies, and cheese (optional: chili flakes).
- Place the tray on the grill or in the oven for about 3 to 5 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the cheese is melted.
- Take the tray off the heat and cover your sandwich with the second slice of bread, and you’ve got a delicious Philly Cheesesteak!
