Creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken Recipe + Serving Suggestions

If we’re talking about chicken dishes, this creamy garlic parmesan recipe is what I consider the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time). It’s timeless, tender, and full of flavor — plus, you can make it in just 30 minutes!

What You’ll Need

You’ll need a bunch of ingredients for this recipe, so let me break it down for you:

  • Chicken breasts: I prefer boneless, skinless chicken breasts because they are (1) high in protein and (2) cook much faster.
  • Butter: You can use salted or unsalted butter, but if you want to take it one step further, you can use garlic herb butter to infuse your dish with extra nutty and earthy flavors.
  • Garlic: You’ll also need to add bits of minced garlic to the sauce. But if you’d rather skip the chopping, garlic paste works well too.
  • Grated parmesan: I like using aged parmesan for this dish because it has a more pungent aroma and potent flavor.
  • Chicken broth: You’ll need some liquid to thin out the sauce. While water is fine, I prefer using chicken broth for an extra layer of savoriness.
  • Italian parsley: Italian parsley is what you want to add some freshness and color to your dish.
  • Calabrian peppers: This is completely optional, but if you enjoy a bit of spice in your garlic parmesan chicken, consider adding these peppers to your ingredient list.

When it comes to cooking, I always say that it’s the little things that count. So, take a look at these pro tips that can make your dish 10x better.

First of all, although you can buy ready-made grated parmesan in a canister or a bag, I recommend grating your cheese from a block. It melts much better and provides a stronger flavor profile.

Secondly, if you don’t want to use chicken broth or water, you can substitute wine instead. For this recipe, dry white wines like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Grigot work perfectly!

Thirdly, use a 12-inch skillet if you have one. This helps reduce and thicken the sauce more evenly. Plus, it gives you more room to cook your chicken breasts in one batch.

Lastly, if you’re particular about the color of your dish, you can add a few drops of Gravy Master to your sauce to make it darker. If that’s not important to you, feel free to skip this step.

Now that you’ve finished cooking your garlic parmesan chicken, you might be wondering what to serve it with. Here are a few ideas:

  • Potatoes: You can pair your dish with mashed potatoes, potato wedges, or roasted potato salad with tzatziki.
  • Roasted Veggies: If you’re in the mood for veggies, you can serve your chicken with broccoli and cheese, garlic asparagus, or grilled green beans.
  • Pasta: For pasta, you can have buttered noodles, garlic parmesan pasta, or a simple penne pesto.
  • Bread: When it comes to bread, you won’t go wrong with garlic bread with cheese.

Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

This is one chicken recipe you’ll want to make over and over again. It features a delightful combination of nutty garlic flavor, sharp parmesan, and the best seasonings. Pair it with a side dish, and your meal is complete!

Ingredients

  • 1½ pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • ½ cup of butter (salted, unsalted, or herb butter)
  • ½ cup of grated aged parmesan cheese
  • ¼ cup of chicken broth (you can also use water or white wine)
  • 2 tablespoons of minced garlic (or garlic paste)
  • 1 teaspoon EACH of minced Italian parsley and olive oil
  • Kosher salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 1½ teaspoons of diced Calabrian peppers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Get your chicken breasts and season them with salt and pepper. Then, set them aside.
  2. Now, grab your 12-inch skillet, drizzle in some olive oil, and let the pan heat for about a minute. Once it’s hot, add a small piece of butter and swirl it around.
  3. Place your chicken breasts onto the pan in one layer. If they don’t fit all at once, you can cook in batches.
  4. Let your chicken breasts sear for 4 minutes (undisturbed) before flipping them and searing the other side for another 2 to 3 minutes. After that, remove your chicken from the pan.
  5. Lower the heat of your stove. Using the same skillet, add your chicken broth and scrape the bottom to loosen the brown bits.
  6. Toss in the rest of your butter in the same skillet. When it’s completely melted, pour your garlic paste, minced parsley, and diced peppers. Stir everything until combined.
  7. Add half of your grated parmesan and stir until it’s fully incorporated with the other ingredients.
  8. Return your chicken breasts to the skillet and turn them to coat completely with the sauce.
  9. Sprinkle the rest of your grated parmesan on top and bring the entire mixture to a simmer. Cover with the lid and let it cook for about 7 to 10 minutes.
  10. Serve your chicken with the side dish of your choice, and you’re done!
